Resistance to change is linked to the human tendency to defend familiar habits. It is a natural part of any change process.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-55fc6c3dc6fa155475ae9b3a7406915d\">Wikipedia<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-56010f7ab9f972ce634ed6bcc13e33c8\">I don\u2019t particularly like the term \u201cresistance to change.\u201d Why?\nTo me, the word carries a negative tone and often creates the impression that someone is deliberately trying to hold back progress. But I know that people naturally resist what they don\u2019t understand or what they fear.\n\nDo human emotions make someone a bad person just because they\u2019re not immediately enthusiastic about change?\nAbsolutely not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-985b85005f68d413bb15dcaf18c08af3\">We are all different.\nWhere one person is more reflective and needs time to analyze a change, another may already be excited about the opportunities it brings and ready to move forward.\n\nThat\u2019s why it\u2019s impossible to drive change using the same \u201ctemplate\u201d for every individual. People need different things at different times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b892e26812a0b05e451b09beb1db7381\">Change always stirs up emotions, and that\u2019s why we need to make space for them.\nHow we deal with emotions during change is still something we, in Finnish work culture, have a lot to learn about.\n\nHere are some typical negative emotional reactions triggered by change:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7e7500bd978cf8bbf8d5f14214ea52f6\">\n<li>Change often brings uncertainty and ambiguity about the future.\nThis can lead to fear and anxiety, as people may not know how the change will affect them personally or professionally.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People are often used to certain ways of working and familiar routines.\nChange disrupts these routines and requires learning new things and adapting\u2014something that can feel uncomfortable and demanding. It may also trigger fears about one\u2019s own abilities and self-efficacy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Change can involve a sense of loss\u2014whether it's about position, power, influence, a job, or even identity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If people do not trust those implementing the change or believe that the change is not in their best interest, they may resist it.\nThis distrust can stem from negative past experiences or, for example, insufficient communication.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Implementing change usually requires more energy than it brings.\nIf people feel they don\u2019t have the time to implement the change, they may resist it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If change is presented as a \"command\" without allowing people to participate, resistance is usually high.\nThe experience of being \"forced\" significantly weakens commitment compared to when individuals are active participants in the change process. This is a natural human desire to have an influence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-31bf3f073f8287e71993762d91738120\">Can you lead change, or emotions?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8a1df459f355d1dcd8c69a367c5d4f92\">100% of changes generate emotions!\nTo succeed in leading change, you must be able to lead emotions. Leading emotions requires both the willingness and the skill. This is what we call emotionally intelligent leadership, and since it\u2019s a skill, it can be developed.\n\nIf you want to assess your current level and set concrete actions to improve your emotional intelligence in leadership, I recommend taking the Genos Emotional Intelligence Analysis.
